Scott Spak is a PhD candidate in Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences at the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment. Scott studies regional interactions between atmospheric chemistry and energy. His dissertation research focuses on advancing understanding of the composition and dynamics of aerosols in the Great Lakes region.

Scott combines chemical transport models with statistical analysis of chemical and meteorological measurements to isolate the role of regional-scale atmospheric processes on regional and local air quality. This work provide a new framework for evaluating policy options in controlling the effects of particulate matter on human health at the local scale and climate forcing at the regional scale. Scott is also interested in the impacts of fossil fuel depletion and “surprise” events on energy projections and air quality policy.

Scott’s research at SAGE contributes to an EPA STAR investigation, “Projecting the Impact of Land Use and Transportation on Future Air Quality in the Upper Midwestern United States.”

At UW-Madison, Scott is also earning certificates in Energy Analysis & Policy and Air Resources Management from the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, and is a participant in the Delta certificate program in integrated Research, Teaching, and Learning. He is a science advisor on regional climate change for “Paradise Lost? Artists on Climate Change in the Northwoods,” a touring art exhibit and community education project.

Before coming to SAGE, Scott earned a B.A. in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College (2000) and spent three years in management consulting, applying numerical models to strategic sourcing and corporate finance.
