Claus Moberg is an M.S. Candidate in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin. His research focuses on the interface between regional- and global-scale air pollution and associated human and biospheric impacts. He utilizes several tools in pursuing this work, including regional and global air chemistry and transport models, air quality observations and statistical software. Specifically, Claus has experience modeling air chemistry and climate using MOZART, CMAQ and WRF-CHEM. His current study examines the regional impact in the United States of ozone and carbon monoxide transport from Asia and Europe.
Claus' undergraduate work was conducted in the social sciences. He majored in Political Science and completed an individual major entitled Politics, Economics and Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin in the spring of 2007. Prior to graduation, he was registered with Senior Graduate status, allowing him to focus simultaneously on completing his undergraduate requirements whilst beginning his graduate work. Claus' senior thesis was entitled The Effect of Cooperative Regulatory Programs on the Environmental Performance of Participating Firms: an Empirical and Statistical Study of Wisconsin's Environmental Cooperation Pilot Program and Green Tier Law and was supported by a Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowship.
In the summers of 1999, 2000 and 2001, Claus participated in an internship with the Hurricane Research Department of the NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory where he took part in hurricane reconnaissance flights. He has also held student internships with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies at the University of Wisconsin and in the office of the Hon. Jennifer Schilling, a Wisconsin State Representative. Further, Claus was the chair of the University of Wisconsin chapter of the Sierra Student Coalition and was a founding member of the Madison Clean Energy Coalition. Through these and other obligations, he has gained extensive knowledge of energy systems infrastructure, event planning, logistical organization, statistical evaluation and data management.
Born in the Mountains of North Carolina and raised in the suburbs of Washington DC, Claus currently lives in Madison with his wife, Christine, and their two dogs. He enjoys cycling, skiing, mountaineering, kayaking and anything else that can be done in the outdoors. In 2003 he completed a 18,000 mile road trip in just 23 days, wherein he traveled as far North (Prudhoe Bay, AK), West (Stewart, AK), South (Key West, FL) and to the highest elevation (Pikes Peak, CO) as is possible to do in the United States by car.
