Rachel is a Ph.D. student in the Environment and Resources program. She is advised by Chris Kucharik and Jon Foley. Rachel is interested in how biophysical and socioeconomic conditions drive regional crop yield patterns. Her research is aimed at understanding how natural and human-created conditions interact with one another to produce the crop yields that we observe today. By understanding the extent to which agriculture is controlled by biophysical factors, Rachel hopes to contribute to a broader understanding of the potential society has to increase food production in a sustainable manner, particularly in food insecure places. She is carrying out this work through a NASA Earth Science Enterprise Interdisciplinary Science Program (EOS-IDS) grant.
In addition, Rachel has a strong interest in environmental education and outreach. For part of her dissertation work, Rachel will be developing an outreach product aimed at helping the public better understand both how food production has changed the face of the planet, as well as how they are intimately connected to the environment through their food. Rachel hopes that helping people understand this will leave them feeling more connected to the world and empowered to tackle environmental problems.
Prior to her graduate studies at SAGE, Rachel completed a Master's degree in environmental science at Lund University in Sweden. For her Master's thesis, she collaborated with Gemma Narisma and Jon Foley on a project that looked at the human and ecological consequences of recent abrupt climatic changes. Rachel received her Bachelors degree in biology and a certificate in environmental studies from UW-Madison.
When not in the office, Rachel enjoys being active outdoors, working with social advocacy organizations in her local community, creating art, live music, and exploring the world.
